If the tenant pays rent in cash or with a money order, they should ask their landlord for a signed and dated receipt. legally, the tenant is entitled to a written receipt whenever they pay their rent.109 If they pay with a check, they can use the canceled check as a receipt. Tenants should keep the receipts or canceled checks so that they will have records of their payments in case of a dispute.
