Flagstaff, AZ June 15, 2010 — Insurance and Real Estate experts warn homeowners that many currently Vacant, Rental or Seasonal Homes may not have proper insurance coverage.
The vast majority of homeowners do not understand that they may lose insurance coverage if their home becomes rented, vacant, or even while the home is temporarily unoccupied. Some real estate experts estimate that there are millions of homes in the U.S. that are currently vacant, unoccupied, held for sale, used as seasonal homes or as vacation rentals. To the surprise of the majority of these homeowners, typical insurance policies do not provide adequate coverage.
Specialty insurance provider International Insurance Group, Inc. (IIG at http://www.iigins.com/) announced today an expansion of their specialty insurance program to include Vacant, Rental and Seasonal/Vacation home insurance.
“Almost every regular homeowners insurance policy excludes coverage for water damage, vandalism and other risks when a home becomes vacant, unoccupied or is rented, ” says to Jim Labelle, CEO of IIG. “We are hearing horror stories from consumers who thought they had coverage, but only upon filing a claim did they learn that their homeowners insurance would not provide coverage for some types of losses on homes that are not owner occupied 100% of the time. Homeowners must check with their current insurer whenever the occupancy of their home changes.”
Persons who own homes that are vacant, rented or even a second/seasonal residence or vacation rental should contact their current insurer to inquire as to whether they actually have adequate coverage. Most regular homeowners insurers will deny important coverage after 30 days of vacancy. And some may even cancel coverage altogether if the home is unoccupied for 90 days or longer, or is a rental home.
If you find that you do not have adequate coverage from your current insurer, there are insurance companies who provide speciality coverage specifically for rental, vacant and seasonal properties. IIG (http://www.iigins.com/) is one such provider.
