Water Smart Lawn for Property Manager, Landlords and Property Management Companies
A larger lawn leads to more water and fertilizer user and green property managers, property management companies and landlords make their properties attractive for tenants with smaller lawns. Smaller lawns mean less work and less water consumption. Planting beds can be filled with shrubs and perennials that need low amounts of water. Check with local nursery to identify water smart plants.
A simple and environmentally friendly method for removing excess areas of lawn involves a lasagna-like approach. Start your planning for reducing lawn size in winter and follow these steps in early spring.
1. First, use a garden hose to outline the new landscape bed. Then following this outline, dig a shallow ditch about 4 inches wide and 4 inches deep. Toss this dirt and grass onto the lawn you plan to get rid of.
2. Use cardboard or at least a half-inch thick layer of newspapers (overlap each sheet by 6 inches) to cover all the grass you want to smother.
3. Start your lasagna-style layers using leaves, grass clippings, aged manure and compost. The last layer should be bark mulch (a 50/50 blend of compost and fine bark works well).
4. Leave this area alone for several months while the lawn is being smothered – eliminating air and light will kill the lawn roots and all. A few attractive large container gardens or other potted plants would beautify the area while waiting
5. The covered area will turn into wonderful planting soil. Then plant in the new landscape bed plants that are water smart.
