Be sure to take tips from friends who have gone through an experience similar to what you expect to encounter. Remodeling contractors typically work with self inflicted flexibility that can range over a period of days or even weeks. Getting a good referral from more than one source will help to weed out the pretenders and serious business people in the remodeling business.
For the real go getters, research a little on your own in regard to what it takes to accomplish your desired task – read up on how things are actually done, what types of codes (ex. fire codes) must be maintained, the cost of the parts, and typical amount of labor. Remember, knowledge is power, and typically the contractor has all the power in remodeling situations. Arm yourself, but do not act overly defensive to the contractor you decide to work with… Starting with a poor relationship will do nothing to facilitate a job well done.
