In order to make sure that flood damage is not increased due to heat oil tanks. Both interior and exterior heat Oil storage tanks should be anchored to resist buoyancy and for restraint in flowing water.
- Ensure the fill pipe and all vent pipes are above flood level.
- A full service oil supplier should be considered for this work.
- Add restraints when replacing an existing tank.
Anchoring tanks
If a concrete slab is nearby:
- Place 4-inch concrete anchor bolts into the slab.
- Position the bolts at the one-third points of the tank.
- Follow manufacturer recommendations for connecting coated stainless steel straps using appropriate hardware.
- Pull strap tight before locking into place with hardware.
If only soil is available:
- Screw soil anchors into the ground.
- Position the anchors at the one-third points of the tank
- Follow manufacturer recommendations for connecting coated stainless steel straps using appropriate hardware.
- Pull strap tight before locking into place with hardware.
If tanks are located in a basement:
- Place 4-inch concrete anchor bolts into the slab.
- Position the bolts at the one-third points of the tank.
- Use a sealant to prevent water from entering the home through openings around the bolts.
- Follow manufacturer recommendations for connecting coated stainless steel straps using appropriate hardware.
- Pull strap tight before locking into place with hardware.
